Special Collections
Art Room
The Art Room holds original material in the visual and performing arts, including rare books, photographs, posters and manuscripts. The Art Room collections are viewed in the Special Collections Centre, located on the fourth floor of the Toronto Reference Library.
Arthur Conan Doyle Collection
The Arthur Conan Doyle Room holds an extensive collection of materials: books, manuscripts, ephemera and realia, relating to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his famous fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes. The Collection is housed in separate room on the fifth floor, where people can enjoy the ambiance of a Victorian study, and browse the open shelves in a manner unusual in a special collection.
Baldwin Room
The Baldwin Room holds original material relating to the history of Canada in five major research collections: Books & Periodicals, Manuscripts, Broadsides & Printed Ephemera, Pictures and Newspapers. The Baldwin Room is named after the nineteenth century statesman and reformer; Robert Baldwin, who established the constitutional principle of responsible government in pre-Confederation Canada.
Canadiana Collection, North York Central Library
The Canadiana Department houses a wide range of eclectic reference collections documenting the historical and cultural development of Canada with a focus on Toronto, Ontario and North York. The collection includes materials in a variety of formats such as books, pamphlets, vertical files, scrapbooks, community newspapers, newsletters and magazines, photographs, directories, oral histories, archival materials, maps, plans and municipal voters’ lists.
Genealogy and Local History Collection
The Special Collections Centre holds an extensive collection of Canadian genealogical resources and important resources for Great Britain, Ireland, and the United States. The collection includes a limited amount of genealogical material on other countries. It includes an extensive collection of local histories for Canadian communities, and some non Canadian communities.
Map Collection
The Special Collections, Genealogy and Maps Centre houses the largest map collection in a Canadian public library. The Map Collection consists of current and historical maps, atlases and gazetteers for all parts of the world as well as books and periodicals covering many aspects of cartography. The collection is particularly strong in Canadian materials with an emphasis on Toronto and the vicinity.
Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy, Lillian H. Smith Branch
The Merril Collection is a non-circulating research collection of science fiction, fantasy, magic realism and experimental writing, for researchers, educators, and the general public.We endeavour to collect every title in the English language in the genres of SF and fantasy, as well as a substantial collection of critical material relating to the genre, and non-fiction materials on related topics such as parapsychology, UFOs, SF and fantasy art work, television programmes and films
Osborne Collection of Early Children’s Books, Lillian H. Smith Branch
Children’s books and manuscripts from the dawn of printing up to 1910 are held in the Osborne Collection. The collection reflects the development of English children’s literature with items such as a fourteenth-century manuscript of Aesop’s fables, books and school texts from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and Victorian classics. Notable materials also belonged to famous people; the collection contains Florence Nightingale’s childhood library and Queen Mary’s children’s books.
Performing Arts Centre Collections
Visit the fifth floor of the Toronto Reference Library for materials relating to all aspects of the performing arts. There are books on film, music, circus arts, theatre, acting, film production, musical instruments, dance and television and more. The largest public library collection of music scores in Canada can be found here, and electric pianos to try out your song selections. Film stills, production photos, programs and playbills, archival materials, CDs and LPs are all available
Performing Arts Centre Archival Collections
Researchers, writers and performing arts professionals will want to explore the archival collections, which include historic Canadian sheet music, the personal collections of prominent Canadian actors, manuscripts, posters and photographs. An extensive collection of theatre designers’ set, costume and prop designs provide unique insight into Canadian theatre.
Toronto Public Library Local History Resources
The Toronto Reference Library has Canadian local history resources in the form of local and church histories, books, City of Toronto directories, maps, plans, pictures, newspapers, Council minutes, clipping files, voters’ lists, census returns, campaign literature, archival material and oral history tapes.
North York Central Library provides research and reference materials about Toronto and North York. These collections include books, clippings, pamphlets, vertical files, community newspapers and magazines, art catalogues, directories, council minutes, maps, plans, census returns, voters’ lists, photographs, scrapbooks and archives.
Larger local history collections on Toronto regions are maintained at two district branches, Cedarbrae and Richview.
Toronto Public Library has also produced local history publications for many Toronto neighbourhoods.
